Travel Decision Guide
Lisbon to Algarve: Best Ways to Get There by Train, Bus or Car
The best way to get from Lisbon to the Algarve depends on which town you’re visiting. Faro has direct long-distance trains, Lagos generally requires a change at Tunes, and Albufeira’s train station is outside the resort center. Compare the complete journey—not just the ticket price—before choosing train, bus or rental car.
The decision: Choose the train if your destination has convenient station access; compare buses when their drop-off is closer to your hotel; rent a car when you want to explore beaches and multiple towns. For most itineraries, plan several nights in the Algarve rather than treating it as a Lisbon day trip.

Quick Answer
How do you get from Lisbon to the Algarve?
Faro: take a direct long-distance train from Lisbon Oriente or Entrecampos when the schedule suits you. Lagos: take a train via Tunes or compare direct buses to Lagos. Albufeira: compare bus arrival points against trains stopping at Albufeira–Ferreiras, which is inland. A rental car is often the strongest choice for visiting several dispersed beaches.
Check current dates and connections on Omio for Faro, Omio for Lagos or Omio for Albufeira. For the official rail timetable, use CP — Comboios de Portugal.
The Decision in 30 Seconds
Choose by your actual Algarve destination—not the word “Algarve.”
| Your situation | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Faro city stay | Direct long-distance train | Best if your lodging is within easy reach of Faro station. |
| Lagos / western Algarve | Train with Tunes connection or bus | Compare actual arrival points and connection waiting times. |
| Albufeira resorts | Bus or train plus local transfer | The train does not arrive at the beach resort center. |
| Multiple beaches or towns | Rental car | Useful flexibility, but include parking, tolls, fuel and possible one-way fees. |
| Group with heavy luggage | Door-to-door transfer or rental | Quote the complete route and luggage capacity; do not assume it is cheapest. |
Choose Your Algarve Destination
Faro, Albufeira and Lagos are three different journeys.
The Algarve is a region, not one train station. Choose a destination below; all three summaries remain in the page source for accessibility and search engines.
Faro
For Faro city, check the direct Lisbon–Faro Alfa Pendular or Intercidades services. The station is convenient for a city-focused stay, but beach destinations and eastern-Algarve hotels may require onward transportation.
Albufeira
Albufeira–Ferreiras railway station is inland. Compare a bus arriving nearer the area where you are staying against a train followed by taxi or other local transport. Verify the exact bus terminal too.
Lagos
Long-distance rail from Lisbon connects through Tunes to a regional train for Lagos. Direct intercity buses may reduce transfers. Compare both before choosing; central Lagos makes a good car-free overnight base.

Lisbon to the Algarve: compare the rail corridor with driving.
The blue rail corridor and dashed orange driving corridor are schematic route guides, not surveyed tracks, precise roads or live navigation. Actual service patterns and junctions vary by destination.
Places worth understanding
Schematic connections only—not GPS directions. Lagos usually requires a train change at Tunes. Albufeira–Ferreiras station is inland from the resort center.
Lisbon to Algarve by Train
The train is attractive when the last connection is simple.
Where to depart in Lisbon
Check Lisboa Oriente and Entrecampos for long-distance southbound services. Choose the station printed on your actual ticket.
To Faro
Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services connect Lisbon with Faro; specific stops and schedules vary. Compare trains to Faro →
To Lagos
Long-distance services connect at Tunes with a regional service toward Lagos. Check the total duration and connection buffer, not just the first segment. Compare journeys to Lagos →
To Albufeira
The station is named Albufeira–Ferreiras, and a hotel in Albufeira may require an additional transfer. Compare Albufeira connections →
TFP tip: An Omio result may mix train and bus listings. Read the mode, station names, connection details and operating company before paying. CP is the primary source for rail schedules.

Lisbon to Algarve by Bus
Bus arrival locations can make the difference.
Intercity buses can be particularly useful when the stop is closer to your hotel than the train station. But not all departure and arrival terminals are interchangeable: check whether the departure is Sete Rios, Oriente or another Lisbon terminal on your actual booking.
Use the destination-specific comparisons: Faro →, Albufeira → or Lagos →. Select the bus filter if you specifically want a coach rather than a train.
For a short stay, a direct bus can be easier than a train with a regional connection, even if the scheduled journey is not much shorter. Compare hotel-to-hotel travel time, luggage rules and refund conditions.
Lisbon to Algarve by Rental Car
A car is most valuable after you reach the Algarve.
Driving from Lisbon gives you freedom to explore beaches and towns that are awkward by public transport. The common southbound route uses the A2 motorway and connecting roads. Factor in A2 tolls (the A22 in the Algarve is toll-free), fuel, parking near historic centers and the rental company’s electronic-toll arrangement.
Compare Lisbon and Algarve rental cars →
Car collection in Lisbon
Airport pickup may be simpler for a regional driving itinerary; collecting a vehicle in central Lisbon just to park it there may add hassle.
Return in the Algarve?
Check whether one-way drop-off at Faro or another branch is permitted and whether it adds a fee. The general booking landing page requires you to enter the actual pickup and return locations.
Driving after arrival
Car rental offers the greatest value for multiple remote beaches. It may be unnecessary if you are staying in central Lagos and plan a marina boat outing.
TFP tip: The A22 Algarve motorway has had its tolls removed since 2025, but the Lisbon–Algarve A2 is tolled. Check 2026 route charges and the rental company toll-handling fees before reserving.
Rental-car fine print: If you collect a car in Lisbon and return it in Faro or Lagos, check whether the quote includes a one-way drop-off fee, automatic-toll equipment, fuel policy, insurance excess and the precise rental office location. Compare the complete cost with a train or bus to the Algarve followed by a local rental.
After You Arrive
What matters after the bus or train reaches the Algarve?
Faro
Best for a car-free city break or an eastern-Algarve base. Other beach towns and resorts may still involve a bus, taxi or transfer.
Albufeira
Check the exact resort and whether your bus or train arrives anywhere near it; the main railway station is in Ferreiras.
Lagos
Good for an overnight stay with restaurants, marina departures and the old town within a compact area. Not every beach is walkable from every hotel.
Plan Your Algarve Stay
Plan for several days in the Algarve—not a rushed trip from Lisbon.
For many visitors, three to five nights is a useful starting point, with more time if you want several different beach towns or a slower holiday. Lagos is our featured example for travelers interested in walkable restaurants, marina departures and the western Algarve coastline; choose a different base if your itinerary focuses on Faro or the central Algarve.

Featured Lagos Stay
Lagos Avenida Hotel
Near Lagos Marina, this is a convenient upscale base for travelers arriving by train or bus and taking a boat excursion. A two-night minimum stay has been reported for this hotel; verify the minimum for your dates, room type and rate before booking. Check cancellation terms and parking if driving.
Short-Stay Alternative
Hotel Marina Rio
A practical marina-facing alternative for travelers planning a single night in Lagos. One-night bookings have been displayed previously, but confirm that your dates and room rate permit a one-night stay before paying.
Staying in Faro or Albufeira instead? Choose a hotel there rather than traveling to Lagos just because this page features it. Our hotel pick is a specific Lagos example, not a recommendation for every Algarve itinerary.

An Optional Coastal Experience
Experience Ponta da Piedade from the water.
Once you have arrived and settled in Lagos, a short boat excursion can be an appealing way to see limestone arches, caves and the rugged coastline from below. This is a local experience—not transportation from Lisbon.
Featured: Ponta da Piedade grotto boat tour
Choose a small-boat coastal outing for a relatively low-effort experience. Check sea conditions, departure marina, duration, age restrictions and the operator’s cancellation rules. View the Ponta da Piedade boat experience →
Active alternative: Ponta da Piedade kayaking
Consider kayaking for an active perspective on the rock formations. Confirm swimming ability, weather rules, equipment and fitness requirements before booking. Compare the kayaking experience →
The Fine Print That Matters
The cheapest headline fare may not be the easiest journey.
Ticket destination
Faro, Albufeira–Ferreiras and Lagos are different endpoints. A ticket to the Algarve is not an arrival plan.
Minimum hotel stays
Lagos Avenida Hotel had a two-night minimum when checked for this guide. Minimum-stay rules can vary by date and rate; confirm the selected booking before paying. Hotel Marina Rio is an alternative to check for a single night, but availability is not guaranteed.
Train changes
Lisbon–Lagos trains generally require changing at Tunes. Recheck regional onward service and connection times.
Bus terminals
A bus that reaches town may be more convenient than a train whose station is outside the resort area—but verify the exact stop.
Tolls and car fees
The A2 from Lisbon remains tolled, while tolls on the Algarve A22 were abolished in 2025. Check the exact route, rental-company toll arrangements, fuel policy, deposits, insurance excess and possible one-way drop-off fees.
Travel time
Compare door-to-door elapsed time, not only published train, bus or drive times.
Flexible hotel rates
An inexpensive hotel rate can be restrictive. Check cancellation and prepayment terms before booking. Our Pay Now vs. Pay at Hotel guide explains what to compare before choosing a rate.
Boat weather
Coastal boat and kayak departures depend on sea conditions and operator safety rules. Leave flexibility where practical.
My Take
I would decide on the Algarve town before comparing transport prices.
For a Faro city stay, I would compare the direct train first. For Lagos, I would compare the train via Tunes with the direct-bus alternative and choose based on the actual connection and arrival point. For Albufeira, I would pay more attention to the hotel-to-station transfer.
If I wanted to spend several days exploring beaches along the coast, I would compare renting a car before buying train tickets. But if I were staying near Lagos Marina and doing a boat trip, I would not automatically rent one just to reach the Algarve.
This is an editorial decision framework—not a claim that I personally completed these routes.
TFP Recommendation
Choose the route that fits both your arrival and the trip after it.
The Recommendation
Faro: Compare direct rail first. Albufeira: compare bus versus train plus a local transfer. Lagos: compare rail via Tunes with bus arrival times. Multi-stop beach trip: compare a rental car and its total fees.
For a multi-night Lagos base, consider the marina-accessible Lagos Avenida Hotel (check its two-night minimum). For one-night stays, compare Hotel Marina Rio; a Ponta da Piedade outing is an optional addition. Those choices are not prerequisites for visiting the Algarve.
Your next step: choose the destination, then compare a route and the hotel-to-station connection before paying.

Lisbon to Algarve transportation questions
What is the best way to get from Lisbon to the Algarve?
It depends on the destination. Direct long-distance trains work well for Faro, Lagos commonly requires a transfer at Tunes, and buses may reach some resort areas more conveniently. A rental car is often best for exploring multiple beaches.
Can you take a direct train from Lisbon to Faro?
Yes. Alfa Pendular and Intercidades services run between Lisbon and Faro; verify your departure station and date.
Can you take a direct train from Lisbon to Lagos?
Typical rail itineraries require changing from long-distance rail to a regional service at Tunes. Compare total journey time with buses.
Does the train stop in central Albufeira?
No. The Albufeira–Ferreiras rail station is inland from central Albufeira and the beach resort areas; plan the onward connection.
Is the Algarve a good day trip from Lisbon?
Generally not. The journey is long enough that most travelers will get more value from a multi-night visit than a day trip from Lisbon. Three to five nights is a practical starting point if you want beaches, old towns and coastal excursions.
Do you need a rental car in the Algarve?
Not always. For a compact stay in Lagos or Faro, public transportation plus walking, taxis or a boat excursion may suffice. A car becomes more attractive for dispersed beaches and multiple towns.
Where should I stay in Lagos without a car?
Consider a hotel near the marina or historic center with easy station or bus access. Lagos Avenida Hotel is one centrally located multi-night option with a reported two-night minimum. Hotel Marina Rio is worth checking for a shorter stay; availability varies by date.
Can I book Lisbon–Algarve train tickets with Omio?
Omio can be used to compare available train and bus itineraries for your travel date. Confirm the mode, stations, connections and final booking terms; CP publishes official rail timetables.
